Error message: "Another Shadow Instance is running"

Follow

This error message prevents you from using two sessions at the same time. Only one Shadow session per account can be active at the same time.

If you encounter this message after an unexpected shutdown of your Shadow (e.g. rebooting, tearing of your Ethernet cable or your computer), it is because the application is still running the processes of your local computer even if you do not see it in the Windows taskbar or programs.

How to fix it

  • Open the Task Manager by using Windows Search or pressing the key combination Ctrl + Alt + Del.
  • In the Processes tab, close all Shadow processes. Both in Applications and Processes in the background.
  • For security purposes, Restart Windows.

  • I already have a support ticket in ( for multiple issues) but just wanted to say that this issue is continuing for me (MacBook Air) after everything in this section was executed on my end. Shadow is forever thinking it's already running :(

  • Hello Channing,
Have you tried to restart your Mac?
Have you tried to uninstall the Shadow app and reinstall it ?

  • I'm on Mac and Ive restarted my computer and reinstalled it and nothing changed, I'm still stuck on "Another Shadow Instance is running" PLEASE HELP. this platform has so many problems yet no forums, like how i meet all system requirements but everytime I open a game it freezes, and all of the support people just say the same exact BS. "We will put you into a ticket to investigate further." yet never responds. I cant believe I payed for this crap. If someone could actually help my problems and not just "make a ticket" that would be nice.

  • Yo Bobby Lazizi, make sure you set vsync off and make it so that Shadow only take 15 mb/s, if that works you can keep it at 15 or move to 20, 25, 30 etc.

  • I'm on mac too, i uninstalled shadow and i STILL GET THE SAME DAMN ERROR,"ANOTHER SHADOW INSTANCE IS RUNNING" BUT DO I SEE IT? NO! IT'S NOWHERE, I CAN'T FIND IT, I CAN'T CLOSE IT, I RESTART MY MAC EVERYTIME AND IT ALWAYS POPS UP. I SWEAR SHADOW'S SUPPORT DOESN'T EVEN ANSWERS ASAP, THIS IS ABSOLUTE TRASH WASTE OF $24.95 DISCOUNT SMH. DISAPPOINTED .

  • I have found a fix for this for mac people.

Go to finder > applications > utilities > activity monitor
In processes you will see shadow is still running even though the application is not loaded. If you force quit that, it should boot up fine!

  • Good catch, Tim! That worked for me.
